Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz’s historical essay The Hangings sparked a heated debate in Poland. It is the story of an 1794 anti-Russian uprising by the people of Warsaw and their execution of traitors.
The events take place during a period of decline in Poland, whose lands had been carved up by Russia, Prussia, and Austria in series of three partitions. Poland’s last king, Stanisław August Poniatowski, was elected in 1764. He carried out reforms in the spirit of the Enlightenment, but it was too late. The anti-Russian Bar Confederation was formed to defend Polish independence. In an effort to salvage the state, an extraordinarily modern constitution was passed on May 3, 1791. Nevertheless, following the collapse of the uprising led by Tadeusz Kościuszko in 1795, the Polish state ceased to exist.
