FA

The book by the esteemed translator and poet Piotr Florczyk contains essays on translation, literary canons, the global literary market, discusses why and how certain authors are translated, and covers the topic of translingualism (writing in an acquired language).

The author examines the actions of important figures in the dialogue (practical and conceptual) that has been going on between poets from the United States and Poland since the 1960s. The heroes of the essays include, among others: Czesław Miłosz, Robert Hass, Adam Zagajewski, Edward Hirsch, Jane Hirshfield, Stephanie Burt, Stanisław Barańczak, Piotr Sommer, Andrzej Sosnowski, Kacper Bartczak, Jacek Gutorow, Benjamin Paloff, Mira Rosenthal, Karen Kovacik, Robin Davidson, Krystyna Dąbrowska and Julia Fiedorczuk. Florczyk also discusses the translingualism of Piotr Gwiazda and Ewa Chruściel, and in the afterword writes about translation as a performance and asks about the issue of untranslatability.

Piotr Florczyk is a poet, translator of contemporary Polish poetry into English and a scholar. His translation work includes selections of poetry by Wojciech Bonowicz, Julian Kornhauser, Jacek Gutorow, Jarosław Mikołajewski, Paweł Marcinkiewicz, Krzysztof Siwczyk, Dariusz Sośnicki and Anna Świrszczyńska.

In 2016, the Book Institute, the Polish Cultural Institute in London, the Polish Cultural Institute in New York and the Polish Institute in New Delhi awarded Florczyk the 2016 Found in Translation Award for his translation of Anna Świrszczyńska’s volume of poetry, Building the Barricade, published by Tavern Books.
