Rejwach by Mikołaj Grynberg has been published in Sweden. The translation by Tomas Håkanson was supported by the Book Institute as part of the ©POLAND Translation Program.
The book Rabalder – as the title of the translation reads – was published at the end of February by Rámus publishing house.
The author of the outstanding non-fiction book Oskarżam Auschwitz this time presents himself to readers as a creator of plots, 30 stories about the fate of Jews in contemporary Poland. These stories are neither optimistic nor cheerful, because some of his characters deny their identity, some hide it, some tell anti-Semitic jokes.
The memory of the second and third generations returns to Grynberg in completely new forms, the writer has already accustomed readers to the fact that he says things they would rather not hear, he shows that Jewish memory can still surprise.
In recent years, the Book Institute has also supported translations of Rejwach into English (I’d Like to Say Sorry, but There’s No One to Say Sorry; The New Press, transl. Sean Gasper Bye) and Spanish (Acantilado, transl. Maila Lema).
The translator of the novel, Tomas Håkanson, has also translated works by Tadeusz Różewicz (Recycling), Andrzej Stasiuk (Taksim, Jadąc do Babadag), Andrzej Sapkowski (Ostatnie życzenie), and Jan Brzechwa (Akademia Pana Kleksa).
